Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways to Highlight Lesser-Known Attractions Across the State

Lebanon, TN (January 8, 2010) – The Wilson County Convention and Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce the recent launch of the Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways self-guided driving tour program. The tour will motivate residents and visitors to get off the beaten path and explore some of Tennessee’s lesser-known treasures.

Led by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways is a statewide tourism initiative that was put together to highlight the hidden gems of Tennessee. It encompasses all 95 counties along 15 regional trails and features Tennessee’s five National Scenic Byways. The Old Tennessee Trail is the first of the trails to be unveiled and highlights more than 70 significant tourism sites, promoting Davidson, Williamson and Maury Counties.

“The Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways Program will enhance established tourism offerings and bring greater awareness to lesser-known attractions located in communities throughout all 95 counties in our state,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “This idea, which originated with a private citizen, has led to a partnership between state agencies, local officials and tourism partners that holds economic opportunities for every county and will allow visitors to experience more of Tennessee’s special places and scenic landscapes.”  In November 2009, country music superstars Rascal Flatts lent their voices and support to the statewide project as musical ambassadors and their hit song “Life is a Highway” will be used as a theme song for this exciting new program.

“The trails initiative is one of the most comprehensive marketing and branding initiatives ever to be launched from the state’s tourism department,” said Commissioner Susan Whitaker of the Department of Tourist Development. “Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways is an opportunity to showcase tourism’s major sights as well as our state’s exception off-the-beaten-path attractions which are some of Tennessee’s greatest assets.”

Tourism partners across the state will have brochures for the various scenic driving trails, which provide detailed information and directions to hundreds of fun places to stop along the way and discover all that Tennessee has to offer – from established attractions to hidden treasures.

Additional trails will be launched throughout the state beginning this month and throughout the spring, with the newly launched Old Tennessee Trail serving as a model.
